7.4. Grammatical Range and Accuracy

Both the range of structures you use and how accurately you use them.

The short version

  • Both range and accuracy are scored.

  • Simple sentences alone cap your band.

  • Punctuation is marked here too.

  • Complex sentences that tend to be faulty are a Band 5 feature.

Two things, not one

Grammatical Range & Accuracy looks at two things:

  • Range: a mix of sentence types (because, if, which)
  • Accuracy: the sentences still make sense

A short correct sentence is better than a long sentence the reader cannot follow. At Band 7, error-free sentences are frequent. At Band 8, the majority of sentences are error-free.

Punctuation counts here

Punctuation is marked under this criterion, not under Coherence and Cohesion. A comma joining two full sentences, or a missing full stop, is a grammar error like any other.

Look only at the grammarBand 7

Some people think city centres should ban private cars on weekdays. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

I agree only when the city can offer a reliable bus or tram in the same hour. A weekday ban on private cars can cut peak delays, because commuters then have one clear rule. If the same streets have no frequent bus, the ban just pushes the jam to the ring road.

  • GrammarA clear complex sentence with when. The meaning stays easy.
  • GrammarBecause. The sentence is still controlled.
