5.2. Map Labelling: A Second Plan

Label a market hall from one speaker's walk: find the doors, follow the aisle, and leave the spare box empty.

Questions 15-18

Label the plan below. Write the correct letter, A-H, next to Questions 15-18.

  1. 15
    the wildflower meadow15
  2. 16
    the compost bays16
  3. 17
    the bird hide17
  4. 18
    the volunteers' hut18

In the test the letters A to H sit on a drawn plan on screen. The lesson's own plan is further down.

The short version

  • You see a plan with lettered boxes and a list of numbered places. You choose a letter for each place.

  • One speaker walks the site in Part 2. Places come in the order a visitor would walk them.

  • There are more boxes than places. The spare box stays empty. Do not force a place into it.

  • Choose a letter for every place, sure or not. A blank scores nothing.

What you have to do

The test shows a plan with boxes marked by letters, usually more boxes than questions. There is also a list of numbered places. You listen to one speaker walking the site and choose the letter of the box where each place is. Some sets ask for words instead of letters: then you type a word, inside the word limit. The places come in recording order, so the answer to 12 comes after the answer to 11. A box the speaker never fills stays empty.

Walking order

A Part 2 speaker describes a site in the order a visitor would walk it. You go in at the door, along the main aisle, then to the rooms at the far end. The list of places follows the same order. So when you hear the place for question 13, the speaker has passed everything before it. Question 14 is further along the route.

Step by step

  1. 1
In the preview pause, find the start and read the list of places

Find the doors, the gate or the you are here mark, and put your cursor on it facing into the building. Read the numbered places, and say what each one is: a shop, a room, a desk. Then rule out every name already on the plan, such as stairs or loading bay. Those are landmarks the speaker will use to point, not answers.

  2. 2
Listen for the named landmarks and the route words

The speaker walks the aisle and names places as they pass. A landmark on the plan tells you where they are: opposite the lift means the box facing the lift. Route words move you: the first on your left, past, beyond, at the far end, behind. Move your cursor with each one.

  3. 3
Match the meaning, and wait for not and now

The list says first-aid room, the speaker may say where the nurse sits. Listen for the meaning. Then wait for the two correction words. Not: beside the lift, not by the doors rejects the doors. Now: it used to be an office, it is now a shop rejects the old use. Choose the place that stands.

  4. 4
Rule out the box the speaker rejects and the box you have filled

Each not rules out a box. Each answer you give rules out its box, because a letter is rarely used twice. If two boxes are left, the last direction word settles it: on the right or opposite the lift leaves one. If a box is still empty when the talk ends, it was the spare. Leave it.

  5. 5
If you lose a place, jump to the next one

Do not rewind in your head. Read the next numbered place, listen for its name or meaning, and pick up the route from there. When the talk ends, choose your best guess for the lost place: an empty box near where the speaker was. One lost answer must never cost you the next two.

One worked box

Plan: the doors at the bottom, an aisle up the middle, boxes A and B on the left of the aisle, C and D on the right, A and C nearest the doors. Question 12: the fish counter.

Script: *Walk up the aisle. The fish counter is on your right, not on your left where it was last year, and it is beyond the first stall, at the far end.* Start at the doors, facing up the aisle. *On your right* keeps C and D. *Not on your left* rules out A and B, which is the old place. *Beyond the first stall, at the far end* rules out C. Choose D.

Every box goes the same way: face the aisle, follow the direction words, wait for not and now, rule out, choose.

Quiz time5 questions

Every drill uses the same small library, described in its instructions, and a clip of ten to fifteen seconds. Practise one step at a time.

Face the aisle before the clip starts

The plan shows a small library. The door is at the bottom and an aisle runs up the middle. Rooms A and B are on the left, C and D on the right. A and C are nearest the door. Start at the door, face up the aisle, then play the clip once.

The speaker describes the archive with landmarks that are not on the plan. Let it go, listen for the café, and choose its letter.

Try a full set

Below is a plan of a market hall and a Part 2 talk of real length. There are five places to label and seven boxes. Work the five steps in order. Leave the spare box empty.

Westgate Market Hall
Plan of Westgate Market Hall. North at the top. The south doors are at the bottom centre on Westgate Street, with the information desk to their left and an empty box marked G to their right. A line shows the aisle running north from the south doors. The first box on the left of the aisle is A and the box opposite it on the right is B. Above them a wide box across the middle of the plan is C. At the far end of the aisle is box D. The top row, from left to right, holds the loading bay, which is closed to the public, box F with blue double doors facing the loading bay, box E, and the stairs to the upper floor. A second line leaves the aisle just before D, runs west, then north past the left-hand end of D to the gap between the loading bay and box F.

You enter through the south doors at the bottom, with the information desk on their left. The seven boxes marked A to G are empty on purpose. The information desk, the south doors, the loading bay and the stairs are labelled because they are landmarks, not answers.

Tips

  • Names on the plan point, they do not answer

Opposite the stairs uses a landmark on the plan to point at a lettered box. Choose the box, never the landmark.

  • A box can stay empty

More boxes than places is normal. When the talk ends with one box unfilled, that was the spare. Do not move an answer into it.

  • Never leave a place blank

A wrong letter costs nothing more than a blank. Give every numbered place a letter before the part ends.

Recap

  • In the preview pause, find the doors, face up the aisle, and rule out the names already on the plan.

  • Follow the walking order, wait for not and now, and choose the place that stands.

  • Rule out the boxes the speaker rejects, and leave the spare box empty. Jump to the next place if you lose one.

Next: choosing between options, and matching a list to a bank of answers.
