Check any IELTS writing task: a Task 2 essay, an Academic Task 1 report or a General Training letter. You get an estimated band for each of the four criteria IELTS marks, with what to work on. Free, three times a day, with no account.
Your writing
IELTS asks for at least 250 words.
Your band
Paste a question and your answer, then check it. You get a band for each of the four criteria IELTS marks, and what to work on next.
How the checker marks your writing
It uses the same scorer as Anglai's Writing mock tests. The scorer reads your answer against the public IELTS band descriptors and gives a band for each of the four criteria: Task Response (Task Achievement for a letter), Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy. The band for the task is the average of the four, rounded to the nearest half band.
We check the scorer against writing that IELTS examiners have already marked. In our latest check, in September 2026, it scored 120 Writing tasks with examiner bands, and 81% of its bands were within half a band of the examiner's. Its band is still an estimate, not an official IELTS score.
What it checks
- Task 2 essays, which are the same in Academic and General Training.
- Academic Task 1 reports. A report is marked against the chart, graph, table, map or diagram it describes, so you upload a picture of yours. The checker reads every label and figure from it and shows you what it read. You correct anything it got wrong, and your report is marked against that.
- General Training Task 1 letters.
- Answers of 50 to 700 words, with the question you answered.
- Three checks and five chart readings a day for each visitor. They come back at midnight UTC.
We tested the chart reader on the 30 charts, maps and diagrams in Anglai's Academic mock tests, whose figures we know. Its readings included every one of their figures. A photo that is blurred or cut off can still be misread, which is why you check the reading before your report is marked.
What happens to your writing
Your question, your answer and any chart you upload are sent to the AI service that runs the scorer, to be read and marked. Anglai does not store them. To count the three free checks, Anglai keeps a scrambled form of your internet address for no more than two days. The privacy policy has the details.
