7.5. The Jump to Band 6

Swap the habits that keep a Band 5 speaker where they are.

The short version

  • The gap here is habit, not vocabulary.

  • Answers that are too short cost the most.

  • Repeating and self-correcting instead of adding a reason.

  • Answer, then because, then one more detail.

What Band 5 sounds like

The speaker usually keeps going, but by repeating words, correcting themselves and slowing down. Complex sentences usually contain an error, and when the idea gets harder the flow breaks.

What Band 6 sounds like

The candidate is willing to speak at length, even if the thread slips. The answer mixes simple and complex forms, and the listener can follow most of it without effort.

The whole jump

Keep going, connect the reason to the answer, and finish each sentence before you start the next.

Band 5 habit

Answer in a few words, then fill the gap by repeating them: It is good... it is good. Slow down and correct yourself instead of adding a reason. Stop halfway when the idea gets harder.

Band 6 habit

Answer → because → one more detail. Use a because or an if in most turns. If you drift, finish the sentence and come back to the question.

Same Part 1 question: What do you usually do at the weekend?

Band 5

I go shopping… with my friend. It is good. We buy… things. Um… yes, I like shopping. It is good.

Band 6

Most Saturdays I go to the market near my flat because it is cheaper than the supermarket, and then I usually meet a friend, we have lunch, sometimes coffee after. I do not go every week, if it is raining I stay in and watch something, but I try to go out at least one day.

Why that answer still scores 6

The Band 6 answer is not perfect. We have lunch, sometimes coffee after runs two ideas together. I do not go every week, if it is raining needs a full stop. But the speaker keeps going, gives a reason with because and uses an if clause. The listener always knows what the answer to the question is.

Check

Look at the two answers above. Choose what keeps the Band 5 answer at Band 5.

What is the problem with the Band 5 answer?

Speak at length

Answer for at least 20 seconds. Say what you do and give the reason with a because. Add one more detail (who with, how often, what happens if the weather is bad). If you lose the thread, finish the sentence you are in and go back to the question. Do not stop early.

Recap

  • Use a because or an if in most turns.

  • If the idea gets harder, finish the sentence rather than stopping halfway.

  • If you drift, finish the sentence and come back to the question.
